Forgive and Forget

Forgive and Forget

We have all made mistakes and have things in our past that we would prefer to forget. Unfortunately, it is not easy to shake off our past. Even if we can push it aside and forget, we may find that others cannot.

Thanks be to God that He does not dwell on our past. He does not hold our mistakes against us. He does not hold our past over our heads or constantly remind us of our flaws. In the book of Isaiah, the Lord says, “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins” (Isaiah 43:25). Did you catch that? God can press the delete button and erase our transgressions and forget our sins. Scripture also says that “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9). God will forgive AND forget.

If God can forgive and forget our sins why do we find it so difficult to forget our past mistakes and to forgive ourselves? Why is it so difficult to forgive and forget what others have done to us? It is time to free ourselves and to free others from the past. It is time to forgive and forget.
