31 Oct Focus on Authenticity
It is Oct 31st, Halloween in the US, and people are ready to celebrate an opportunity to put on their costumes and be anyone but themselves (even if only for a few hours). It is something we learn to do at a young age. Choose a cartoon character, superstar or superhero, and pretend to be them. Yes, it is all in fun, but how often do we pretend to be someone we are not?
If you have been reading my posts for a while, you know I love quoting Psalms 139:14 – “I praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” It is a great reminder that God makes no mistakes. Every detail of who we are was masterfully designed by Him. We are perfect and amazing just the way we are.
So who are you pretending to be and why? First, stand in the mirror and take off the costume for yourself. We can become so adept at being in character that we forget who we really are. Next, take off the costume for those closest to you. Stop pretending to be the perfect wife, the flawless mother, etc. Give them the gift of your imperfection. Who knows…maybe it will free them to reciprocate. Finally, take off the costume for the outside world. Your colleagues, customers and social media followers are not an excuse to be a fictional character in your own reality show.
Revealing our true selves can be difficult, but the freedom of authenticity is priceless. Stop pretending. Be free.
