12 Mar Protecting the Temple
As you approached this Lenten season you may have had difficulty deciding what to give up. Maybe you wanted to choose something that would be a sacrifice, but would also benefit you in the long run. Perhaps you were just looking for the most challenging thing to give up to test your willpower and resilience.
When it comes to giving up physical things, we should consider 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 for motivation. In these verses, Paul asked “know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth within you?” Our bodies are, indeed, the temple of God and we should give up whatever is not appropriate for the upkeep of the temple. Think about it. If you truly thought of your body as a temple would you intentionally do things to damage it? Would you smoke? Would you use drugs and substances that could negatively alter your physical and mental state? Would you allow yourself to get into a drunken, uncontrollable state? Would you allow someone to enter the temple whose only objective was to defile it?
Take a moment to seriously consider what you are allowing into your body and how you are treating it. If you are struggling with what to give up, give up those things that are destroying the temple.
Reflection: What do you need to give up to protect your temple?
